The NYC Department of Finance in conjunction with NYC Veterans and State, City and County Government and Elected Officials will be hosting a number of events throughout the Boroughs for Veterans, Unremarried Surviving Spouses, and Gold Star Parents to educate them about various exemptions and other entitlements.
On Monday, November 12, 2018 Flushing House honored their resident veterans with a rooftop brunch overlooking New York City. This holiday is especially important at Flushing House because of our aging population. Photos, artifacts and stories were shared of time spent in the military and the important lessons learned while serving their country. Flushing House residents continue to be an inspiration to us all.
The residents were treated to a special luncheon in the Flushing House solarium which offered breathtaking views of the leaves around Queens and the Manhattan skyline in the distance. The menu was created by Executive Chef, Dennis Grobe, and served by the Flushing House Culinary Team. The veterans shared stories, photos and medals with one another while their meal was being prepared.
Flushing House Resident, Vera Polak celebrated her 100th birthday with friends, family and neighbors on the Flushing House Rooftop. Vera smiled ear to ear as ‘Happy Birthday’ was sung to her before blowing out her candles. The culinary staff created a special menu just for her party that day. Vera has been a Flushing House resident for over 8 years and is one of several centenarians residing here. Vera can often be found soaking up the rays and taking in the view from our rooftop or busy creating in the lower level Activities Center. Happy Birthday Vera!
